Who is affected by acne?
Acne need not be the devastating disease which affects so many teenagers and adults. Over 75% of all teenagers suffer from acne and something less than 25% develop cystic acne which, if not properly treated can cause permanent scarring. Acne can be present in dry, oily or combination skin. Despite these statistics the physical as well as psychological damage can be minimized through better understanding of its causes and its treatment.
Acne can manifest itself in different ways:
Papules
Pustules and
Comedones
Depending upon the severity of the condition it can actually result in cysts or lesions, often severe. The incidence of acne is affected by a number of different factors such as age, environment and genetics.
Can anything be done to minimize the effects of acne?
Yes, careful cleansing of the skin can be very helpful. Acne develops just below the surface where most soaps are not effective in penetrating into the pores and killing the acne bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide cleansers, which also can contain granules, are recommended for use twice a day.
Can stress or fatigue play a role in acne development?
Yes, the avoidance of stressful situations and getting adequate rest is important in preventing acne breakout. Just as in the case of diet, common sense is an important component of avoiding or minimizing effects of acne.
Doesn’t acne just go away when you reach age 21?
Waiting for acne to go away is simply not a wise thing to do. The disease is by no means limited to adolescents or teenagers in general. Waiting for that time in life when you “outgrow” acne can be a critical error. Without the proper treatment it can lead to permanent scarring.
Does the use of cosmetics aggravate or cause acne?
Many cosmetics contain ingredients intended to provide “slip” and increase coverage. They also can clog pores.
The most common ingredients found in cosmetics, derivatives of fatty acids are:
Lanolin
Stearic Acid
Isopropyl Myristate and Cetyl Alcohol, and
Cetyl Alcohol
(You may want to jot these ingredients down to check the ingredients in your cosmetics or when shopping for cosmetics.)
These ingredients can cause what is described as “Acne Cosmetica.” For this reason, every product formulated and sold by Total Skin Care Clinic will not clog your pores. Whether you have active acne, cosmetic acne or simply want to avoid the problem and keep your skin clear and healthy, our products can help you.
